A Brief History of DWI Education
In the past when someone was arrested for DWI they have typically been court ordered for a chemical health evaluation and to follow recommendations. Historically recommendations were limited to 1-2 day education programs, victim's impact panels, or drug and alcohol treatment. While this approach had it's strengths it also had it's problems. Some education programs have tended to treat clients as criminals and have been unsympathetic to the the client's personal DWI experience resulting in a depersonalization of the course content and a lack of integration of what might otherwise be good information. At the other end of the spectrum some DWI offenders have been recommended to drug and alcohol treatment programs that have not been structured in such a way as to meet their particular needs or concerns.
